As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.””
John 9:5 ESV
Isn’t it amazing how you can have read something so many times and yet miss something. As a follower of Jesus I am very familiar with Jesus being known as the Light of the World, but what caught me here was the start of the sentence “as long as I am in the world “. Jesus was talking to his disciples they had asked Jesus, about a man that had been born blind and they wanted to know was it the man’s sin or that of his parent’s that had caused the birth defect.
I struggle with this line of thinking, and although I cannot comprehend why people should be born with disabilities, I believe that God has his purpose and we take our view point from our cultural understanding. Who was blind here? The man was physically blind! But the disciples were struggling to see that the messiah was in their midst.
Jesus healed the man, he could see, what a commotion was created, opinion was divided, the religious were indignant, it was the Sabbath. Can we get so caught up in our religious trappings that we fail to see?
Walking in their midst was the light of the world, but He was not always going to be there, Jesus knew what lay before Him and He knew he was going to ascend, he was physically not going to be around until His return, for which we still await.
Interestingly Jesus also said we are the light of the world, “”You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”
Matthew 5:14-16 ESV
One day Jesus will return and every eye will see, until then let His light shine in us, so that others might see.
