Seeing though the eyes of a child

“and said, “Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.”

‭‭Matthew‬ ‭18:3‬ ‭ESV‬‬

I’m really enjoying spending time in our garden this summer and finding this a place of solace and peace, a retreat from the stresses of work. Our neighbours young sons often watch, while I’m working, but have been too shy to say hello through the garden fence. We just smile and enjoy the games that they have been playing, delighting in their innocence and sharing in their excitement has they discover new things. This week I was planting out some bedding plants, when a familiar face looked through the fence, I said hello and he disappeared as usual, I continued and was surprised when a little voice said “I like snails”. We started to discuss snails, slugs and spiders, what our favourite colours are. He showed me his collection of snails and before long was bringing his collection of potted plants for me to inspect.

The simple joy of seeing and discovering through the eyes of a child as refreshed my soul, I wonder if this is what Jesus was asking us to be like. Can we look afresh, let go of our limited perceptions and see again the wonders of creation and rejoice in the creator and sustainer of all things?
