“For at that time I will change the speech of the peoples to a pure speech, that all of them may call upon the name of the Lord and serve him with one accord.”
Zephaniah 3:9 ESV
I’ve spent many hours trying to learn French, and was mentally bruised by unkind words of a teacher as a child when he criticised my French accent. This through out my adult life has caused me to stumble and I am really hesitant to speak when we visit France, a country that we love.
How much easier it would have been before the Tower of Babel, when everyone had speech in common, however this led to man’s desire to be like God. Humanity thought that by their efforts they could become gods. He however had other ideas and they were thwarted and languages were born.
Here the prophet is looking forward, and as we look at the day of Pentecost, the people gathered heard the gospel being proclaimed in their language. Multiple tongues, one message.
But as we leap forward to a time still to come, when every knee will bow to the King of kings, there will be commonality of speech and we all will serve Him with one accord.
