Come dine with me

At the head of the table is Jesus and he says come dine with me. “I don’t deserve it and I cannot afford it.” You say with trepidation. Jesus replies “come, you are welcome, because like for all of my other guests I have paid the price”.

Come dine with me. . . “Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and he who has no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.” ‭‭Isaiah‬ ‭55:1‬ ‭ESV‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬ Thirsty? . . It is time to get something to drink. Hungry it is time to get something to eat. For me eating and drinking is one of the great pleasures of life, if this is coupled with great company, who could want for more? . . This covers three of our most basic needs, we cannot survive without food and water, we were not made to live our lives in isolation. . . Yet here there is a greater invitation, this restaurant has no exclusions, you can come as you are. Looking from the outside everything is set, the tables are laden with the most scrumptious of food, the drinks are flowing and all the diners seem so convivial. . . But you know there is a price to pay, you know you don’t deserve to be invited, you know that no one would invite you if they had found out what you had done. Sadly you turn away, knowing that you will not be accepted because of your sinful state. But the owner chases after you and implores you to come in, hesitantly you accept and cross the threshold. You are invited to take off the clothes of your old life and put on the new garments being offered to you. You are invited to wash off the grime of sin that you have collected. . . Now you are led to the table and every head turns towards you, you expect the burning eyes of condemnation but all you see is love, warmth and acceptance. Just to sit at the foot of the table would be a honour, but you are invited to come higher, and then higher still. . . At the head of the table is Jesus and he says come dine with me. “I don’t deserve it and I cannot afford it.” You say with trepidation. Jesus replies “come, you are welcome, because like for all of my other guests I have paid the price”. . .
