“It is good for me that I was afflicted, that I might learn your statutes.” Psalms 119:71 ESV http://bible.us/59/psa.119.71.esv How many of us enjoy pain or affliction? It seems an alien concept that something that can cause distress, can be good for us. Yet so often when we look back and see what God has brought us through, we can acknowledge that it was through these painful times that we learned so much. Often we want to keep others, especially the ones that we love from going through those experiences, we want them to learn from our mistakes, we want to shield them from pain. Providing a sheltered cocooned environment is essential for the well being of our children, but gradual exposure to risk is also necessary for their development. However childhood does not last forever and we have to let go and allow them to make their own choices. When the trials come rather than gloating “l told you so”, we can smile when they make the same mistakes that we did, safe in the knowledge that the One who delivered us and drew us to His ways is the ultimate teacher.
